Make a Difference Day (MaDD), held annually in October, is a national initiative started by Community Service Volunteers (CSV) to provide people across the country with the opportunity to try out volunteering. Works4U along with the rest of the HFVC Group (including Hammersmith & Fulham Volunteer Centre and Brent Active Citizens) gathered at Salusbury WORLD to do some much-needed redecoration.

20 members of staff and volunteers from the Hammersmith & Fulham and Brent offices (and some of their relatives) turned up to spend a day re-painting the offices of Salusbury WORLD, a charity attached to Salusbury Primary School in Brent.

The organisation provides support for refugee children and their families through educational, social and emotional support, and helps parents and the wider refugee community by providing home/school liaison, family workshops and outings, and also a comprehensive social advice service. They work closely with the school to achieve this.

However, their offices had been neglected while this sterling work was going on. The Works4U team was able to clean up and brighten the rooms with a thorough lick of paint

They were also lucky enough to be treated to a lunch cooked by Spice Caravan’s ‘Spice Girls’, a catering social enterprise. The company came to be after several African women met through Salusbury WORLD, cooking to raise funds for school events. It wasn’t long before they were catering for both the school and local functions with an array of traditional dishes from their home countries, to the delectation of the people being fed.

All in all, this year’s MaDD was a great success. Congratulations to Works4U’s Kathleen Wabrowetz, who organised the Challenge with aplomb.
